Cross stitch is a type of embroidery usining X shaped stitches to create a picture. There are two ways to stitch, either follow a cross stitch pattern or stitch on a stamped cross stitch design. You will need the following materials to cross stitch: counted evenware fabric (usually aida), threads, a needle and scissors.
Cross stitch is the most popular form of embroidery as a hobby. The earliest known sampler was created by Loara Standish, dated 1653 and is currently in USA. Cross stitch was used as household linen or as ornamental items. However it is recently used to create "art" and hung as a picture.
